Learn

Koalas are an iconic part of our Redlands landscape, but they face serious challenges. By learning more about them and how to live alongside them, you can play a vital role in their survival.

Koala Facts

Koalas are marsupials, not bears. They spend most of their time in eucalypt trees, eating specialised leaves, sleeping up to 20 hours a day, and raising their young in pouches.
Learning the basics about koalas helps us understand their unique needs and why they are so vulnerable.

Road Safety

Many koalas are injured or killed crossing roads, especially at dawn and dusk. Drivers in the Redlands can make a big difference:

  • Slow down in known koala zones.

  • Be extra alert at dawn and dusk when koalas are most active.

  • If you see a koala crossing, stop safely and give it space.

  • Report any koalas near or on the road to our hotline.

Road Safety Tips

Living with Koalas

Koalas often live near homes and backyards. You can help by:

  • Keeping dogs inside or supervised at night.

  • Making swimming pools safe with escape ropes or covers.

  • Planting koala-friendly trees.

  • Allowing safe passage through your yard if you live near bushland.

Koala Health and Diseases

Koalas suffer from diseases like chlamydia and KoRV, which can cause blindness, infertility, and weaken their immune systems. Many sick koalas appear thin, have inflamed eyes, or show unusual behaviour.
If you see a koala that looks unwell, please call our 24/7 hotline.

Spotting and Tracking Koalas

Technology is helping researchers and carers track koala movements. Spotter apps and tagging projects allow us to understand their behaviour and better protect them. Community reports of sightings also provide vital data.

Knowledge saves lives, the more we understand koalas, the better we can protect them in our changing landscape.

Not Urgent? Log a Sighting

If the koala appears healthy but is in an unusual spot (such as crossing a road, in a low tree, or resting in a yard), you can log a sighting. This helps us track koala movements and respond if needed.
